Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement on the passing of Quebec filmmaker Gilles Carle:
“Gilles Carle was one of the most important filmmakers of his generation. Particularly in the 1970s, he was the very incarnation of the creative energy of Quebec cinema. At once irreverent, incisive, and tender, his work influenced generations of actors and filmmakers, and shared Quebec with the rest of the world.
“Gilles Carle’s work shaped the common imagination of Quebec and Canada. It’s impossible to think about Canadian film without remembering Carle’s “La vraie nature de Bernadette”, “La mort d’un bûcheron” or “La postière”. Using images as others use words, as a humanist and a lover of life, Gilles Carle leaves behind legacy of great originality, and the lasting memory of a man of integrity and an uncompromising artist.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our parliamentary caucus, I offer my deepest sympathies to his life partner Chloé Sainte-Marie, his family, his friends and many admirers.”
