Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic Bob Rae condemned yesterday’s terrorist attacks in Jakarta, Indonesia and expressed sympathy for the deceased and injured victims.
“These heinous and cowardly attacks remind us that peace-loving nations everywhere must remain vigilant against the threat of terrorism,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “We stand in solidarity with the people of Indonesia as they seek to restore peace and bring the planners and perpetrators of this attack to justice.”
“The Liberal Party and our Parliamentary caucus also wish a fast recovery to those injured by the attacks and share our condolences with the families of the victims who lost their lives.”
Canadian Edward Thiessen of St. Catharines Ontario and another Canadian yet to be named were injured in two blasts targeting luxury hotels in the Indonesian capital.
“We join those in Indonesia, the region, and around the world who condemn these senseless acts of violence,” said Mr. Rae. “We know that these barbaric acts will not derail the progress Indonesia has made in recent years since the Bali bombings that so horrified the world.”
“We are confident that Indonesia will respond again by continuing along a path of progress that has promoted peace and security while strengthening their achievements as a pluralist and democratic society.”
