Today we pay homage to one of Canada’s leading voices in the struggle to improve the lives of indigenous people here and around the world. After an unprecedented three terms, Phil Fontaine has decided not to run for re-election next month, ending nine years at the helm of the Assembly of First Nations.
Chief Fontaine has devoted his life to bringing about positive change and advancement for First Nations people. He was a leading force in negotiations that led to the Kelowna Accord, the resolution and settlement of claims arising out of the 150-year Indian residential school tragedy, and in securing last year’s historic residential schools apology.
Chief Fontaine represents the finest role model, not just for our Aboriginal peoples but for all Canadians. Although he is stepping down from the AFN, his dedication to the advancement and self-determination of indigenous people in Canada and around the world will not end here.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission, I wish the very best for Chief Fontaine as he carves out a new path on his journey.
