One year ago today, Canada made history as Parliamentarians stood on behalf of all Canadians in the House of Commons and offered a formal apology for the residential schools tragedy.
That historic day last June ended a long struggle by Canada’s Aboriginal people for recognition of the pain and injustice they suffered. It put this dark chapter in our history behind us, while opening a new chapter of healing and reconciliation in Canada. While we cannot rewrite history, we can look to a brighter future for all Aboriginal people as we work in partnership with them to aid in their healing and ensure they can share in this country’s prosperity.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary caucus, I urge all Canadians to reflect on this day and what it means for our Aboriginal people and for Canada. It is only when all Aboriginal peoples – whether First Nations, Metis or Inuit – can live in healthy communities and can share in the goals and dreams of their fellow Canadians that Canada will have achieved justice and reconciliation among our people.
