It is with much sadness that we mourn the loss of a truly great Nova Scotian and a great Canadian, Dr. Bill Gillis. Dr. Gillis passed away in his hometown of Antigonish last weekend at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer.
From his years as an academic and with the Geological Survey and continuing on to a distinguished 28-year career in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, Dr. Gillis – or “Billy,” as he was affectionately known – was entrusted by Premiers Gerald Regan and John Savage with many important portfolios as a Minister of the Crown in their governments.
His years of public service were greatly appreciated and we have lost someone whose dedication to family, community and country will be truly missed.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Dr. Gillis’ family and friends, including his beloved wife, Joan. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them – Dr. Gillis will not be soon forgotten.
