Statement by Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic Dominic LeBlanc on the Situation in Tehran

Posted on November 30, 2011

OTTAWA– Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Dominic LeBlanc made the following statement today on the storming of the British Embassy in Tehran:

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada, and our Parliamentary Caucus, I strongly condemn the attacks which have taken place against the Embassy of the United Kingdom, as well as the Ambassador’s Residence, in Tehran.

Those responsible must be held accountable for this unacceptable disrespect of International Law. The Government of Iran has failed in its responsibility to ensure the protection of foreign representatives and their staff. The Government of Canada must state clearly that we will not tolerate such dangerous and violent actions in endangering the lives of foreign diplomats. This is totally unacceptable.

I ask that security be immediately restored so Canada can work, with the United Kingdom and other allies, to fulfill our diplomatic responsibilities.”
