Statement by Liberal Industry Critic Geoff Regan on the CRTC Ruling on Usage-Based Billing

Posted on November 15, 2011

OTTAWA– Liberal Industry Critic Geoff Regan made the following statement today on the CRTC decision on usage-based billing:

“This is a big improvement over the January 2011 decision which would have introduced usage-based billing, but I still have concerns about how today’s ruling will impact consumer options.

Liberals led the charge last winter with the help of hundreds of thousands of Canadian consumers in forcing the Conservative government to review the CRTC’s decision to allow this anti-competitive and detrimental usage-based billing system.

Liberals continue to believe that an effective wholesale regime that allows smaller internet service providers to lease broadband infrastructure at fair prices is vital for the Canadian economy in the digital age. This Conservative government must ensure that Canada’s internet traffic remains neutral, that competition amongst service providers is encouraged and that consumers are protected.”
