Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on Black History Month

Posted on February 1, 2013

OTTAWA– Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on Black History Month:

“As we mark the beginning of Black History Month, communities from coast to coast to coast will spend the next several weeks celebrating the tremendous contributions and achievements of black Canadians.

For over four centuries, black Canadians have played an integral role in our country’s history, from Mathieu Da Costa to the fight to end slavery to the Underground Railroad to Canada’s first black politician, Mifflin Gibbs. This year we reflect particularly on the inspirational leadership and service of the late Lincoln Alexander, our first black Member of Parliament and Canadian viceroy.

I hope all Canadians will take this time to learn about the people and events that have shaped our country’s heritage.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I offer my best wishes to all Canadians during this Black History Month.”
