Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on Thai Pongal

Posted on January 14, 2012

OTTAWA– Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on Thai Pongal:

“Tamil communities here in Canada and around the world are celebrating Thai Pongal, the Tamil festival of the harvest, and even though January days are short in Canada, we can all appreciate and welcome the return of the sun.  This festival’s focus on new opportunities, the richness of the land and bounty of the harvest are all facets that we understand and share across Canadian society. All of us can reflect upon our shared values which strengthen our communities and the country as a whole.

Thai Pongal also celebrates Tamil culture and heritage. This is a testament to Canada’s diverse cultural fabric and the importance of celebrating our multicultural traditions.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, please accept my best wishes for a wonderful festival.”
