BADDECK, NS – The Liberal Express arrived in Baddeck where Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff met up with the entire Liberal caucus to celebrate a successful summer tour and look ahead to the fall Parliamentary session.
“I can’t think of a better way to cap off what has been a spectacular summer than gathering here in beautiful Cape Breton,” said Mr. Ignatieff.
Since the beginning of June, the Liberal Express has visited 12 provinces and territories, 102 cities and towns, and held more than 140 public events while travelling 39,000 kilometers – and there’s still gas in the tank.
“Meeting thousands of Canadians all across the country, I heard plenty about the issues people really care about – learning, care and global leadership, and what they mean for our economy.”
Liberals also heard plenty about how out of touch Stephen Harper is with Canadians. He spent the summer ringing up a $1.3-billion bill for the G8/20, gutting the census, spending $16 billion on an untendered fighter jet contract and $10 billion on prisons to address “unreported crime,” and attacking public servants who defend veterans and the life-saving gun registry.
“Stephen Harper says ‘I make the rules,’ but he’s dead wrong: Canadians make the rules,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “Over the next few days, we’re going to make sure these issues are front and centre for the return of Parliament – where they belong.”
“Is it any wonder why Stephen Harper is so out of touch – he hasn’t taken a single question from an ordinary Canadian all summer long, sticking to a handful of tightly-scripted events – and not one public event in Quebec.”
Even though the bulk of the Liberal Express tour is behind us, there is still gas in the tank. Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal team are heading to the Northwest Territories next week, and then to Northern Ontario.
