The Liberal Express in Nunavut

Posted on August 11, 2010

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal Express landed in Nunavut today to demonstrate his commitment to working with the people of the Arctic on the issues facing Northerners.

“I want to lead a government that will work with people of the Arctic to find real solutions to the challenges they face – today and into the future,” said Mr. Ignatieff.

“Stephen Harper has disappointed Northerners at every turn. He tells them he has their interests in mind, but he has proven time and again that his only concern is vote-buying. This is not the way we would do things. We are presenting Northerners with a clear alternative – one that is progressive, compassionate and responsible.”

During his visit to Nunavut, the Liberal Leader will meet with representatives of government – including Premier Eva Aariak and Iqaluit Mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik, tour Frobisher Bay by boat, visit a community greenhouse and engage with local people to hear their concerns for the future.

“Land claims, Arctic drilling and seismic-testing, and the environment are all issues Liberals take very seriously, and as we have seen in recent weeks, the Harper government doesn’t,” added Mr. Ignatieff.

In regards to land claims, a future Liberal government would engage in a serious dialogue with Aboriginal leaders to ensure that modern treaties are implemented fully as negotiated, according to their letter, their spirit and intent, and the fundamental objectives they embody, he said.

Liberals also believe that the best way to research, explore and develop the North is through partnership with the Inuit.

“The Liberal Party believes that economic development cannot be at the expense of environmental responsibility,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “We want to lead the world in protecting our oceans and our coastal communities from ecological disasters, with a smarter, more effective, science-based approach to oceans management.

“Stephen Harper has rushed ahead with oil exploration, while completely ignoring the needs and concerns of the Inuit. They have serious concerns that the ecology of the North would be at risk.

“We are committed to partnerships with our Aboriginal peoples in the North so that they are part of the process on decisions that directly impact their lives. This will empower communities and help raise their standard of living.”
