Five Years of Harper: A Legacy of Broken Promises

Posted on January 19, 2011

As Stephen Harper approaches his fifth anniversary as Prime Minister, today Liberals published a list of 145 promises broken by Stephen Harper since 2006.

“Stephen Harper has not kept his promises – and we have 145 clear examples of his record of deceit and disrespect for the Canadian public,” said Liberal House Leader David McGuinty. “The Conservatives will promise whatever it takes to be elected, and once elected they will say anything to hold onto power while turning their backs on Canadians.”

Mr. McGuinty highlighted Harper’s broken promises from the Conservatives’ 2006 and 2008 election platforms covering government spending, child care and health care, and investing in innovation.

“Stephen Harper’s legacy is one of broken promises and shredded commitments to Canadians,” said Mr. McGuinty. “Promising action but never delivering, muzzling critics, stifling information, ignoring the voices of Canadians, choosing ideology over fact and party politics over what’s best for Canadians – THIS is what the Harper government has delivered to Canadians.”

The list of 145 broken promises adds to last week’s release of Five Years of Harper which shows how the Conservative record has left Canada – and especially Canadian families – worse off today than they were five years ago.

“The Liberal Party of Canada is offering Canadians a clear choice: a Conservative government that for five years has led Canada in the wrong direction, or a Liberal government that will shape a better future for our families,” said Mr. McGuinty.

“While we’ve been busy building a progressive, responsible and compassionate alternative through a positive, open dialogue with Canadians, Stephen Harper is throwing more mud and invective with fabricated claims and hot-air promises,” said Mr. McGuinty.

“Instead of spending $21 billion on untendered stealth fighters, $10 billion on mega-prisons and adding to his record $56-billion deficit by borrowing $6 billion more to give tax cuts to big corporations, Liberals want to bring the focus back to the economic pressures facing Canadian families, like family care, pensions, learning and jobs.”
