    Earlier this spring, the Harper Conservatives faced a choice in their spending plans. They could invest in jobs for unemployed young Canadians (especially summer jobs for students). Or they could waste your tax dollars on expensive television advertising about their so-called "economic action plan" which is obviously a miserable failure as far as young people are concerned.     Last December 3rd marked the 15th anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty, or more officially, the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction. To mark the occasion, a group of politicians, diplomats, public service officials and NGOS met in Ottawa to celebrate the success of a Canadian-sponsored treaty which has been effective at reducing the number of landmine victims worldwide and in setting a precedent for a new way of creating international agreements that are designed to protect innocent people.   More »
