Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement today on the bombing in Pakistan:
“With the bombing in Lahore, I know many Canadians will be asking themselves just how much the people of Pakistan are expected to endure at this time of great tragedy and suffering.
“It should also give warning to us all of the growing threat of extremism in that region, which is one reason why it is so critical that Canada and our international partners are engaged in strong and active roles in relief efforts. We must not give the Taliban the opportunity to exploit tragedy for gain by trying to influence the most vulnerable at a time of need. The care and compassion of those on the front lines with our humanitarian relief efforts remain essential to our long term commitment.
“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the people of Pakistan. For those here in Canada with family and friends in the country and surrounding region, we join you in your prayers for those who may have been touched by this tragedy.”
