EDMONTON— Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the closure of the Electro-Motive Canada plant in London, Ontario:
“Today’s decision by Caterpillar Inc. to shut down its Electro-Motive Canada plant in London – just days after it posted record profits in the United States – is a terrible blow to the region, as well as the basic principles of fairness and corporate citizenship.
This issue goes to the heart of income security and shared prosperity in Canada. At a time when Statistics Canada is posting weaker than expected job numbers and household debt levels are ballooning, the federal government has a responsibility to take job creation seriously, rather than muse about attacking Old Age Security.
Today’s announcement makes it clear our economy is not out of the woods, and that the Conservatives are failing on Canadian jobs. Stephen Harper once staged a photo op at Electro Motive – it’s time for him to go back there and fix this mess.
Foreign-owned companies like Caterpillar Inc. must be made to understand that we expect assurances in exchange for generous concessions, incentives and tax cuts.”
