Appointed to the Senate by the Rt. Honourable Jean Chrétien, Senator Jane Cordy represents the province of Nova Scotia and the Senatorial Division of Nova Scotia. She has served in the Senate of Canada since June 9, 2000.
She is currently a Member of the following Senate Committees: Library of Parliament (Joint); National Security and Defence; and Social Affairs, Science and Technology.
An accomplished educator, Senator Cordy began her career as a teacher beginning in 1970. It included posts with the Sydney School Board, the Halifax County School Board, the New Glasgow School Board, and the Halifax Regional School Board. Senator Cordy’s career also includes her service as Vice-Chair of the Halifax-Dartmouth Port Development Commission, and as Chair of the Board of Referees for the Halifax Region of Human Resources Development Canada.
Throughout her life, she has also given generously of her time to a number of voluntary organizations. Her efforts have included serving as a Board Member of Phoenix House, a shelter for homeless youth; a Member of the Judging Committee for the Dartmouth Book Awards (from 1993-95 and in 1999-2000); as a Member of the Strategic Planning Committee of Colby Village Elementary School; and, as a Religious Education Program Volunteer and Lector with St. Clement’s Church in Dartmouth.
Her educational background includes a Teaching Certificate from the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, and a Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University.
A native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, Senator Cordy was born on July 2, 1950.
