Senator Pierre De Bané

Appointed to the Senate by the late former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Senator Pierre De Bané represents the province of Quebec and the Senatorial Division of De la Vallière. He has served in the Senate of Canada since June 29, 1984.

He is currently a Member of the following Senate Committees: Foreign Affairs, and Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration, and has been involved with Parliamentary groups including the Francophone Parliamentary Assembly, the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association, and the Canada-United Kingdom Parliamentary Association. His areas of interest and specialization include: fisheries, foreign affairs, and legal affairs.

A lawyer by trade, Senator De Bané is also a former Parliamentarian. First elected to the House of Commons in 1968, he was re-elected in 1972, 1974, 1979, and 1980. During his time in office, Senator De Bané was appointed to several Ministerial positions. They include: Minister of Fisheries and Oceans (September 30, 1982), Minister for External Relations (January 12, 1982), Minister of Regional Economic Expansion (March 3, 1980), Minister of Supply and Services and Receiver General of Canada (November 24, 1978). Earlier in his career, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to: the Minister of Urban Affairs (September 1974), the Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs (January 1974), and the Secretary of State for External Affairs (December 1972).

Senator De Bané studied at the University of Ottawa, Laval University (in the Faculties of Law and Social Sciences), the Trois-Rivières Seminary, and Collège St-Alexandre. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in January 1985.

Born on August 2, 1938 in Haifa, Palestine, he is married to Elisabeth (Nadeau), with one child: Jean-Manuel.
