On September 22, the House of Commons will vote on the future of the life-saving gun registry. Yet all along the NDP has sided with the Conservatives to scrap this essential public safety tool police use over 11,000 times a day. Jack Layton says MPs should be free to vote their conscience, but Conservatives like Peter Kent in Toronto and Alice Wong in Vancouver can’t listen to their constituents—Stephen Harper won’t allow it.
Let’s not take any chances on September 22 – Let’s keep the pressure on Jack Layton and the NDP – and the conservatives, too.
The Liberal Party has led the fight for effective gun control since the start. But we can’t win this next battle without you.
The clock is ticking. Here are 5 things you can do right now, starting with calling Jack Layton.

Help change Jack Layton’s mind. Call him at his Ottawa office at (613) 995-7224, or his Toronto office at (416) 405-8914, and urge him to save the gun registry. Need a script? Use the one below.
Hi. My name is ________
I’m calling to ask why the NDP is voting to scrap the gun registry when the House votes on Bill C-391 on Sept. 22.
Women are disproportionately victims of gun violence. Since the registry came into force, suicides and domestic violence by long guns have decreased significantly. Scrapping the gun registry will make Canadian women less safe and it will be the NDP and Jack Layton’s fault.
I may not be an NDP voter myself, but I have many friends who are, and I will be sharing my feelings on this issue with them in the weeks and months to come.
Thank you for your consideration. Good bye.

After giving him a call, follow up with an email. Copy and paste the script below into an email and send it to : Layton.J@parl.gc.ca
To the Honourable Mr. Jack Layton,
On September 22, 2010, Members of Parliament will vote on the future of the life-saving gun registry.
While the Conservative Party has thinly disguised Bill C-391 as a Private Members Bill, Canadians aren’t fooled. The Bill has the full backing of the Conservative Party and no Conservative MP will be able to vote their conscience on the issue.
If the NDP truly supported the gun registry, you would put principle ahead of politics by showing leadership and asking your caucus to vote against Bill C-391. But instead, you are doing nothing to protect this crucial public safety tool that police use over 11,000 times a day to keep Canadians safe.
Mr. Layton, if the gun registry is scrapped because of NDP MPs, I will hold you directly responsible for its demise. While I am not an NDP voter myself, many of my friends are and I will be sharing my feelings on this issue with them in the weeks and months to come.
Conservative Bill C-391 would allow weapons like the Mini Ruger-14, the gun used by Mark Lépine to murder 14 women and wound 13 others at L’École Polytechnique de Montréal over twenty years ago, to become unlisted, unregistered, and uncontrolled.
The Liberal Party is working to save the gun registry alongside many groups and individuals who have been at the forefront of the fight for effective gun control, such as the Canadian Police Association, the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, l’Association des étudiants de Polytechnique, and the Coalition for Gun Control.
Why are you joining with Stephen Harper by abandoning the gun registry now?
Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
Meanwhile, you can send Snail Mail to:
The Honourable Jack Layton, MP
Centre Block, Suite 634C
House of Commons
Ottawa, ON, K1A 0A6
