The Director of Legal Affairs acts as the legal advisor to the Liberal Party of Canada, reporting to the National Director. We are looking for someone who can provide legal services in a dynamic multidisciplinary environment.

The ideal candidate is a lawyer who has political experience and a proven track record of being successful work clients in an in-house or firm setting and who possess excellent legal and political judgement.

The candidate must be able to work independently but collaboratively within a fast-paced workplace providing legal advice and guidance related to a wide range of matters. This role also requires a sound grasp of the working structure of the Party and its Constitution.

Job Duties

  • Providing legal advice and opinions to the National Director and senior departmental directors.
  • Analyzing and providing verbal and written legal opinions on areas including regulatory compliance, political financing, privacy law and employment matters and general litigation strategy.
  • Conducting legal research, as required.
  • Monitoring and interpreting laws, rulings and regulations affecting the operations of political entities.
  • Managing operational legal risk to reduce litigation exposure.
  • Managing relationships with external legal counsel in respect of the Liberal Party of Canada.
  • Administering the organization’s anti-harassment policy.
  • Leading and conducting high-level workplace investigations, including procedural fairness, record keeping, risk assessment and report writing.
  • Reviewing of contracts, fundraising proposals.
  • Other duties as required.


  • Law degree and qualification to as a member in good standing of a law society in a Canadian jurisdiction (2-4 years legal experience).
  • Proven ability to work within a dynamic, team-oriented environment where the range of responsibilities is varied.
  • Ability and aptitude for recognizing, investigating and analyzing problems, and for assisting in the development of innovative solutions to complex situations.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the Canada Elections Act, privacy legislation and employment standards legislation.
  • Experience in the research and the creation of best practice processes and policies.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Commitment to Liberal values.

Working Conditions

  • May work irregular hours.
  • Some travel may be required.
