Freelance Translator, English-French (Fixed period)


The Liberal Party of Canada is seeking a freelance translator for an opportunity to join an existing dedicated team of translators, staff and volunteers to support Justin Trudeau and the Liberal team ahead of the 2019 election campaign.

The English-French translator will translate various projects and campaign documents for the staff and management. Responsibilities include: reading the original material/documents and writing them in the target language, searching for political, governmental and administrative terms in the party’s database to determine the correct translation, and liaising with the translation manager or coordinators to discuss points that need to be clarified. The translator is expected to provide guidance to management and colleagues on how best to manage and interpret the translated material effectively.

  • Read the original material/documents and write them in the target language, ensuring that the content, meaning and intent of the source/original text are retained in the translation.
  • Identify and resolve all issues related to the meaning of words, phrases or concepts when translating from one language to another.
  • Reread, revise and edit final translated versions, ensuring that the terminology is consistent throughout the translation.
  • Consult the party’s database and reference materials such as online or print dictionaries to find the best term/terminology and ensure the accuracy of the translation.
  • Liaise with the translation manager or coordinators to discuss translation requirements and any points that need to be clarified.
  • Use the appropriate software for the presentation and finalization of the work.
  • Comply with codes of ethics that protect the confidentiality of information.


  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in French-English translation or equivalent studies.
  • ATIO, CTTIC or OTTIAQ certification would be an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of French and English with the ability to write appropriately and professionally while considering the different writing styles and editing guidelines of both languages.
  • Good verbal communication skills in English and French.
  • Proven management skills with the ability to prioritize assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions

  • Variable hours especially required at night and on weekends.
  • Telecommuting.
