TROIS-RIVIÈRES, QC– The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made the following statement today on the occasion of Black Ribbon Day:
“Black Ribbon Day is commemorated around the world as a reminder of the pain and suffering generations endured under the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, traced back to the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. These two tyrannical regimes oppressed and destroyed the national and personal freedom of millions, particularly across Central and Eastern Europe.
Liberals were proud to put forward a motion, adopted unanimously by the House of Commons, which established August 23rd as a day for Canadians to remember the untold victims of deportation and extermination, and in promotion of democracy and universal human rights.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I stand with all those here in Canada and around the world as we solemnly reflect on the importance of this day.”
