Last December 3rd marked the 15th anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty, or more officially, the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction. To mark the occasion, a group of politicians, diplomats, public service officials and NGOS met in Ottawa to celebrate the success of a Canadian-sponsored treaty which has been effective at reducing the number of landmine victims worldwide and in setting a precedent for a new way of creating international agreements that are designed to protect innocent people.
I hope we all will pause to reflect on the incidence of autism and the availability of timely, affordable treatment. For those facing autism on a daily basis – who serve as a constant source of learning and motivation for me – I know that World Autism Awareness Day has even greater significance. It says: “You are not alone, we will do more.”
